Jules Vallès est né le 11 juin 1832, au Puy-en-Velay. Professeur de grammaire, son père tentera toute sa vie de monter en grade et sa mère n’aura cesse d’oublier ses origines paysannes. Par cet antagonisme qu’elle subit, celui entre la ville et la campagne, mais aussi celui entre la petite bourgeoisie et les milieux populaires, l’enfance de Jules Vallès (ou plus exactement Vallez) influera grandement sur son oeuvre future.
